ボタニカルライトは、植物が共存する微生物が生命活動を行う際に、土や水の中で放出される電子を利用して発電するという方式です。2023年7月18日から、渋谷ヒカリエ4階のヒカリエデッキで、このボタニカルライトを利用した常設の実証実験が始まりました。これは東京23区内の商業空間で初めての試みです。
渋谷ヒカリエは、「渋谷から未来を照らし、渋谷から世の中を変えていく光になる」という思いを込めて、脱炭素・循環社会への貢献を目指しています。このボタニカルライトの発展を支援し、それを通じて未来を照らす一歩を踏み出すために、この実証実験を開始したのです。
実験では、四季を通じて変化する植栽との相性や電流値を定期的に観測し、ボタニカルライトの技術向上と普及に向けたデータ収集を行っています。
ボタニカルライトは、植物が光合成を行うことで活発化する土壌や水中に存在する微生物の活動により生まれる電力を利用して発電します。発電の際に排出されるのは水のみで、その水は再び植物に吸収されるという循環が生まれます。

Botanical Light: Harnessing the Power of Plants for Sustainable Illumination at Shibuya Hikarie
Hello everyone! Today, I’d like to introduce you to a unique and eco-friendly project that has just begun at Hikarie in Shibuya, Tokyo.
This venture is a collaborative effort by Green Display Corporation and Tokyu Corporation, and is named ‘Botanical Light’. Astonishingly, Botanical Light harnesses the power of plants to generate electricity, adopting a future-oriented energy supply method.
Botanical Light works by using the electrons emitted in soil or water when microorganisms coexisting with plants engage in their life activities. Starting July 18, 2023, a permanent demonstration of this Botanical Light technology has been initiated on the 4th floor of Shibuya Hikarie, at the Hikarie Deck. This is a pioneering effort in commercial spaces within Tokyo’s 23 wards.
Shibuya Hikarie is committed to illuminating the future from Shibuya and transforming the world from Shibuya. With this belief, it aims to contribute to a decarbonized and circular society. As part of this endeavor, they have begun this demonstration to support the development of Botanical Light and take a step towards lighting up the future.
During the experiment, regular observations of the compatibility with changing vegetation throughout the seasons and electric current values will be conducted. This data collection is aimed at advancing Botanical Light technology and promoting its widespread use.
Botanical Light generates electricity by utilizing the energy created by the activities of microorganisms in soil or water that becomes active when plants photosynthesize. Only water is released during the power generation process, and this water is subsequently absorbed by the plants, creating a cycle.
The future we aim for is one where we actively incorporate such eco-friendly energy sources. We expect that this experiment, which has begun at Shibuya Hikarie, will serve as a stepping-stone towards that future.
